This God

I just read this poem on a good friend's blog about an hour ago and it just keeps rolling around in my head and my heart. The first reading brought tears because the love of God is the deepest and most basic truth in my life in this season. My friend Dawn says it much better and clearer in this piece she wrote for her blog today. You can find more of her writing at Beneath the Surface:Breath of Faith.

I have another friend who is an artist and she is working on a portrait of Jesus that would simply go along side these words so well. I may be doing some connecting up in the days ahead. :)

This is love: not that we loved God,
but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:10

He is my morning meditation.
This man. This God.
He is my life and breath as I gather my thoughts and energy for the day.
Limited stretching to grasp limitlessness.
My hand reaches, stretching out, fingers extended.
I am seeking to grasp the unseen.
Yet He is with me.
He promises.

I wonder about this Son of Man.
How His love is to be grasped.
That there is hope and power to grasp this unfathomable love.
That though it is wide and long and high and deep.
Though it seem insurmountable.
It still is so completely able to bend it's knee and grasp my hand.
That together with all of His children, His holy people,
It is possible to know His Holy embrace.

  1. I wonder why God has us on different coasts? I guess He just want His love to travel coast to coast via our sweet sisterhood in His Grace! There is a present coming for you to your house. Should be there by Tuesday. God laid it on my heart to send it off to you... actually earlier this week. Which just shows that I am slow to obey...but hope that it blesses you right on time. Love and hugs, Dawn

    1. PS- I would love to see the artist's work. I really appreciate the way God ministers through various mediums in art ;)

    2. I'll forward it to you on FB. It is a work in progress but oh my goodness, it is amazing to me.
AND THANK YOU! thank you for the gift, I am so excited.

  2. This poem is lovely and perhaps you will share the painting too, one day.

  3. Wow! I really love the meditation of Him every day. This - paired with the painting - stunning really. Thank you for pairing them together!

    1. Thank you for letting me show Dawn the painting. You have an amazing gift my friend!

  4. that is a beautiful post. i was just sitting here thinking about god's love. i was thinking that although i know suffering produces perseverence, there is NO WAY i'm buying that my god would take away jack just so those left behind could persevere and grow in faith. not my god. my god is the one in the poem. my god is love.

    1. I agree Anna. This God of love, who IS love, does not cause our heartaches or untimely death (whatever that means). We may gain character, strength, perseverance as a result or by product of our response to tragedy, but I too do not think that God "sets up" these life circumstances.
I was reading your blog again today and my heart aches for your pain and it caused me to pray for you and your husband and daughter as you walk through this awfulness. I admire you so much as you embrace grace so desperately. It is a beautiful thing my friend.
