The classic Normal Rockwell idea of a family gathering for Thanksgiving seems to be the standard that most people are measuring their holidays against. So this has led to countless blogs and articles and TV shows about how to have a stressless holiday. No one feels they can ever have a family as happy as this classic and beloved picture.
I am looking at that painting full of laughing and loving faces and seeing that they are just people and people have stuff. Wouldn't it be funny to know the thoughts behind those smiles?
The guy looking at the "camera?" is wondering why his smile is being cut out. The grandma is probably mad at grandpa for not helping peel potatoes and just standing there staring at the bird. The dark haired woman is telling a joke about how awful Grandma's peas always are. The guy on the far left corner with the sleezy smile is probably thinking something sleezy of course. The hooked nose guy in the lower left corner is being shunned and he doesn't even know it. And the white haired lady on the right is wondering who all these people are.
How about a family picture that is totally real and honest. No pretending to have it all together. Kind of like THIS...............
