Writers Love Checks in the Mail

Money in the mail is a lovely thing...it just might be buying me some happiness. A check in the mail is especially fun when it is a surprise! It looks like I am going to be in a fourth issue of The Secret Place Devotional Magazine, according to the check that I found in my mailbox yesterday.

The odd bit about this news is that I do not remember sending the piece in, even though the title does sound like my writing. I poured over my beautifully organized-color-coded freelance Excel spreadsheet and it is not there. The letter accompanying the check includes the title of the submission but not the whole devotion. I can't even find it in my computer files. So weird! I have to wait for the magazine issue to arrive to see what I wrote. Ha!

I am constantly submitting things and I THOUGHT that I was being very careful and organized so I could keep track of all my rejections, acceptances and payments. Potential Clients: Please know that I will never lose your work and I love a deadline, so just ignore this post OK?

My email also announced yesterday that nearly $100 has been added to my paypal account from my new client for the giggle inducing "Udder" subject. Yay me! To be clear; the content I sent them was NOT causing giggles, it was serious information that cattle-people need when ordering farm supplies. The chuckles came from the seemingly never-ending puns that the word udder can produce from my friends. If you wish to add to the udder nonsense yourself, go here and leave it in the comments. :)

My 4th issue will arrive in the fall of 2013.

  1. What wonderful (and wacky) news! It's just one of those things that makes your day. And I'm glad to hear of the $100 deposit. I hadn't heard of getting paid via paypal.

Posting your blog on FB really helped me remember to swing by! Happy news!

    1. Hi Michael, I love getting paid through PayPal. It is so easy for the client and for me! And it provides a built-in pmt record for me.

  2. Money can't buy happiness but it sure is a nice, tangible affirmation. Just recently I had an article I'd written for Just Between Us be republished under a slightly different title and editing, almost TEN years after my original submission and publication! Interesting how that was recycled!

  5. I find your post and situation udderly fun, and the same thing happens to me as a writer. This year I sent in a poem to a magazine and unknown to me, they passed it along to a sister publication of theirs, and then without telling me, I got a copy of the other magazine and a check in the mail. I was thrilled and happy, but had not submitted to that magazine.
Publication and a check, it is all GOOD, right?

  8. Money in the mail is a good thing. Glad you are receiving it. I loved getting it from various publications. Now, I get cheques from the government (Canada pension = social security), something in which I have invested for 40 years (through my taxes).

Hope your boys and girls are all doing well!

    Blessings and Bear hugs!

  10. I'm udderly thrilled at this news!!! :) I haven't been paying much attention to stuff lately...just bogged down in blogland I guess. So I am happy to hear that you are finding success in your writing and that God is provided needed $$ even when you didn't know it was coming! That's always fun. Praise God!
I hope to get back in the swing of things one of these days. Not sure what's going on in my mind...it just seems to have escaped me! LOL.
Blessings to you today my sweet friend.

  11. Money in the mail (or PayPal account) from writing is always great. I especially like when I receive a check from something submitted or written months/years before. I have a spreadsheet that looks a lot like your picture, but every once in a while something goes missing off of it as well :)
