Beware of Totally Awesome Soap...It's Not

How do you feel about the Dollar Store? I have mixed feelings about it. Our small town has a new one and we love finding household items and snacks there at a great price. Hubs and I stop in about once a week on our way to the main grocery store for everything else.

In fact we go so often that the cashier always greets us with a smile and we chit-chat a bit about the weather, our work schedules etc. But I am wondering if maybe we are getting a little too chummy with her. At least I am pretty sure that is what she is thinking after a recent visit......

Cashier, as she rang up the sunhat we bought for me: Cute hat, good for all this sunshine.

Hubs: I don't go out it in at all, burn too easily.

Cashier: Yeah that pasty white skin.

Hubs mutters as he runs his card through the ATM: Wow, I've been called "white" but never "pasty"!!

Poor Cashier turns completely red!!: Oh I'm so sorry, I didn't mean....oh I am so sorry!

That nice lady will probably hide in the back the next time we walk in.

So anyway, 99Cent stores and Dollar stores; what do you think of them? I have found them to be great places to find a genuine deal once in a while, like the TOPSY TURVEY TOMATO things we got there. BUT, you have to be careful about many of the items.

For instance, take a look at the dish soap label above. I mean, how many exaggerated adjectives does one bottle of dish soap need? I simply wanted a liquid soap that would cut grease, so I bought this lovely bottle of orange TOTALLY AWESOME ULTRA DELUXE Citrus soap.

The name alone should have been my red flag. A few days later I reached for the soap to wash butter off my hands while preparing dinner. A couple squirts of this  Totally Awesome Ultra Deluxe soap on my hands made them feel even greasier than before. The more I tried to lather my hands, the more slimy and greasy they became! So gross. I had to ruin a dish towel to get the butter AND soap off.

Hmm, maybe this stuff would make a good sunscreen for my pasty white husband?

    3. I buy the Totally Awesome Dish Detergent by the case I like it so much. I have no idea what you are talking about. It works great. I even keep a bottle out by my barn for washing my hands. Does a nice job on my greasy hands after working on my cars or tractor. My biggest complaint is that Dollar Tree took on another product replacing the Totally Awesome product and it is a terrible watered down version of dish soap. I purchased a bottle and brought it back. I am still able to order Totally Awesome by the case online from Dollar Tree though at times and they ship it to the store free for me to pick up. Go out and buy yourself another bottle and try it again. I saw they had the Lemon and 2 others Apple and something else just a week ago at my local Dollar Tree. I purchase the Lemon scent online and it works great. Its a shame that your opinion may keep people away from something that only cost a buck and I believe they will be happy with. Just make sure you buy the Totally Awesome brand if you go to get it at Dollar Tree.

  2. We love the dollar store too, but I agree you have to watch the products. Sometimes you can get the best deals; other times you're totally left with butter all over your fingers :)

My favorite dollar store find of this week: a four pack of Italian ice cups. Awesome summer treats, and usually a few dollars at the grocery store. I bought 10 boxes and put them in the basement fridge for when my son has kids over.

  5. Hey, we just got a new Dollar General store in our little town too! My husband is a dollar store junky...I think he'd actually like to work there...

You do have to watch the "deals"...sometimes the deals are not as great as we think...compare prices with Walmart and other places, and you find out it really isn't a "Dollar" store at all.... But it IS convenient when the nearest Walmart is 25 miles away!

Hey, does your dollar store sell sunscreen? :) Maybe someone needs some... :)

  6. Those shops !
Pardon my french but out here they are known as the 'cheap s*** shops' because so much of what you can buy is garbage.
BUT....there are the bonus unique gifts you can find and that's what keeps them going I think.
That and craft supplies- beads, my passion- the variety and cost is amazing and enough to keep me going back.

    1. Yes, for crafters, I can imagine they are great. So many plain containers, mugs, baskets etc to be decorated! Gift wrapping supplies are good deals there too.

  7. We don't have a dollar store, although I've been to them before. We had a similar type store (but not everything was limited to a dollar) but it didn't survive in our town-- it just couldn't compete with the WalMart. Our town is too small to support two discount type stores. I'm not a big fan of the dollar stores I've been to though for a couple of reasons. I find most of the products sub-standard, and I'm always a bit concerned of sweatshop conditions somewhere that support my dollar habit.

That soap bottle is a hoot!

  8. It's funny that you should talk about this, because there are things that I will buy at the dollar stores and things that I won't. Something like your hat, yes. Soap, no. I swear they're merely colored water with a drop of glycerin in them to give them a little sud. Notice I didn't say "sudS." It's only ONE sud per bottle.

I get inexpensive shampoo (at WalMart) like Suave or White Rain. The last time I bought some, there was a good brand on sale that wasn't much more than the others. Dang! A little dollop will suds up like crazy! I'm used to using much more and do a lather, rinse, repeat. But the "good" stuff only uses a titch and you don't have to L, R, and R. So when you figure you'd use two to three times the amount of the cheap stuff, add that into the cost and get the good!
