In the Writing Mode

By artist Jodi Gasner*

"Her black and white purse matched her Spectator pumps perfectly and she looked “oh so proper”. The pretty little butterfly walked along the sidewalk clutching her handbag in front of her. You may not know what “Spectator” means when describing shoes, but as a former shoe sales lady, I am very familiar with the ultra conservative classic style of dress shoe. It is distinguished by the two contrasting colors with the heel and toecap always a darker color, similar to a grown-up saddle shoe. A proper lady wore them with a matching purse in the crook of her arm.
This is the picture that God gave me one quiet morning while alone in the sanctuary of the small church where my husband was the senior pastor. That funny little walking butterfly began a long and traumatic transformation in me that many years later took me into a tattoo shop where I asked for a permanent butterfly to be inked onto my wrist at the age of 54. Without the spectator pumps and handbag! But, to get back to the story of how God used a walking butterfly to change my life....."
A short snippet of my work-in-progress these days. It is beginning to take shape and make sense...finally. For so long I had short stories of seemingly random important events that I wanted to write about, and recently I saw the similar thread in all of them that brings it together. Yay! I still have a long way to go, but it feels like something good could come of it now. Who knows?

* A few years ago I asked my friend and artist Jodi Gasner to draw this for me. Cute huh?

  1. I remember spectator pumps. I even had a pair of them. The looked nice with my black and white suit with the black blouse. My mother worked in a retail department store. When she had time, she sewed my clothes. When she didn't she watched for the sales.
Thank yo for the trip down memory lane.

  2. Oh Susie, that's huge-- how wonderful to see the purpose through all the faithful steps you have been taking in your writing.

  3. Yes, God is working behind the scenes and in the scenes...transforming your writing into something beautiful that is ready to take flight! :) So keep it up, girlfriend! You are heading in the "write" direction!!! :)

  4. That is brilliant. Beautiful and truly inspired xx
